Biden’s Administration Grants “Temporary” Amnesty to 4,000 Yemeni Nationals to Stay in the US

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

On Monday, US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced the extension and re-designation of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for thousands of Yemeni nationals in the US who may be eligible for deportation.

Yemeni nationals who have obtained TPS will be allowed to remain in the US and retain their American jobs until March 2026, as long as they claim to have been present in the country since early July of this year.

In a statement Mayorkas said, “The steps taken by the Department of Homeland Security today will allow some Yemenis currently living in the US to stay and work here until conditions improve in their homeland.”

Additionally, Mayorkas announced what is called “special student relief” for Yemeni nationals in the US with an F-1 student visa, which will allow them to “request a work permit, work extra number of hours during school breaks, and reduce academic burden while continuing to maintain their F-1 status during the TPS period”.

Although the situation was initially intended to be temporary, Yemen was designated as a TPS program in 2015 by Obama administration, and was recently extended again in 2021 by Biden administration.
