Yemen Monitor/London/Exclusive:
Britain’s first Yemeni MP, Ibtisam Muhammad, who was elected from the Sheffield Central constituency, has become the first Yemeni member of the British parliament.
Ibtisam Muhammad, a lawyer and former consultant, won the seat with 16,569 votes, which represents a majority of over 50%. The Labour Party now holds all six seats in the city.
In her acceptance speech, the new MP pledged to use her platform to push for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and recognition of the Palestinian state.
“I spoke to many people during this campaign, and many felt that their voice was not being heard regarding what is happening in the Middle East and in Gaza,” Ibtisam Muhammad said.
“I want to assure these people that I have heard them loud and clear. I will use my voice to defend peace and coexistence in the region, to call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages from all sides, and recognition of Palestine.”
Her father and grandfather worked in the steel factories in Sheffield, a fact she highlighted throughout her campaign for a “green” industrial revolution in the formerly thriving industrial city.
