Chinese Diplomat Announces Working with the US to End Yemen War
Yemen Monitor/Sana’a/Newsroom:
A Chinese diplomat has announced that Beijing is working with the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, including the US, and other key parties to push forward the Yemeni peace plan.
The diplomat urged Yemeni factions to negotiate and sign a peace agreement quickly.
Shaw Cheng, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Yemen, told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that China is in contact with the Houthis and other Yemeni parties. He also called for an end to attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea.
Cheng had met with the US envoy to Yemen and the US ambassador in Riyadh to discuss the Yemeni file last June.
The Chinese diplomat praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts for peace in Yemen, describing them as “positive.” Cheng said he had met with Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al-Jaber, several times, referring to him as a “dear friend.”
He revealed that China plans to work with regional countries to quickly achieve peace in the Red Sea region.
Cheng explained that the Chinese military base in Djibouti is not currently participating in Red Sea operations.
He also pointed out that the Chinese navy has protected 7,200 ships in the Gulf of Aden and off the Somali coast over the past 15 years, with the participation of 35,000 Chinese soldiers.
