Activist Omar Al-Dhiya, the official of the “White Flag Ambassadors” initiative to open Al-Baida-Ma’rib road, announced his arrival with the initiative’s leadership in the eastern city of Ma’rib, which is under the control of the internationally recognized government.
In posts on his Facebook account, activist Al-Dhiya said that “the rest of the initiative’s cars are parked at the contact line and will enter within two days after the removal of war debris from the road.”
He added that “their arrival in the city of Ma’rib came with the aim of meeting with the security and military leadership in the province,” noting that they are now returning to the site of the rest of the initiative members to break the deadlock on the road, praising in this regard the response of the local authorities in Ma’rib in bringing out equipment to remove war debris.
Earlier, the local authorities in Ma’rib Governorate said that they are completing the procedures to open the road, and that the coordinators of the “Peace Convoy” are in the province for this purpose.
The details of the initiative go back to activist Al-Dhiya’s announcement, days ago, of an initiative to cross Al-Baida-Ma’rib road, and he expressed his readiness to cross the line and called for rallying around him and supporting his initiative.
In mid-October 2021, the Houthi group announced the closure of Ma’rib-Al-Baida road, which is one of the main roads linking the Yemeni governorates, after carrying out bloody attacks in an attempt to control the oil and gas-rich governorate.
It is worth noting that the initiative comes months after the announcement by member of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Governor of Ma’rib, Major General Sultan Al-Arada, in February of opening all roads linking Ma’rib to other governorates. However, the Houthi group rejected those initiatives and resorted to opening unpaved and impassable roads.
