The Houthi armed group said on Friday that it had carried out a military operation targeting the US aircraft carrier “Eisenhower” in the Red Sea using winged and ballistic missiles.
“The missile forces (affiliated with the Houthis) carried out a military operation targeting the US aircraft carrier ‘Eisenhower’ in the Red Sea, with winged and ballistic missiles, and the hit was accurate and direct,” said Yahya Sari’a, the group’s military spokesman, in a statement.
Earlier, the Houthi group said that six US and British airstrikes had killed 16 people and injured 41 others, including civilians.
The group said that “the airstrikes on Hodeidah governorate targeted Al-Salif port, the radio building in Al-Huk Directorate, Ghalifqa camp and two civilian houses.”
The US and British militaries said they carried out airstrikes on Houthi targets on Thursday as part of efforts to deter the group from continuing to target shipping in the Red Sea.
US Central Command said US and British forces carried out air strikes on 13 targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
The British Ministry of Defense said the joint operation targeted three sites in the Red Sea coastal city of Hodeidah, noting that the sites containe drones and surface-to-air weapons.
“As always, the utmost care was taken in planning the strikes to minimize any risk to civilians or non-military infrastructure,” the ministry said.
It added that carrying out the strikes during the night was expected to “further mitigate any such risks.”
Mohammed Abdel Salam, the Houthi spokesman, said “this blatant aggression against Yemen is a punishment for its stance in support of Gaza and US support of Israel to continue its crimes of genocide against the wounded, besieged and steadfast sector.”
