The Houthi armed group announced on Wednesday that it had targeted 6 ships in the Arabian Sea, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, with missiles and drones.
The Group spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement that they “carried out 6 military operations, three of which were in the Red Sea, targeting the first ship “Laax”, which was directly hit and severely damaged, while the second operation targeted the ship “Moria”, and the third operation targeted the ship “Sealadi.”
The Houthi spokesman claimed that “the three operations were carried out with a number of sea ballistic missiles and drones, and resulted in direct hits.”
He added that “two military operations were carried out targeting the American ships (Alba) and (Maersk Hartford) in the Arabian Sea, with a number of missiles and drones.”
The sixth military operation targeted “the Minerva Antonia ship in the Mediterranean with a number of winged missiles,” according to the statement.
Since November, the Houthis have targeted more than 112 commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and have recently expanded their operations to the Indian Ocean. They said they were targeting ships linked to Israel, which is waging a brutal attack on Gaza Strip. But the Yemeni government and experts say the Houthis’ goals are domestic to escape domestic crises and improve their image in the region.
In response, the United States and Britain have been carrying out an air strike campaign against the Iranian-backed Houthi group since January 11. As a result, the Houthis have announced the expansion of their operations to include US and British ships.
