Angry protests erupted in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden on Thursday over worsening electricity services as temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
Yemen Monitor reporter said on late Thursday/early Friday that demonstrations in Al- Memdarah neighborhood of Sheikh Osman district in the capital were a continuation of protests that have been going on for days.
He added that protesters set fire to car tires and blocked roads.
Yemeni authorities deployed security forces and armored vehicles throughout the coastal city of Aden since Wednesday evening.
Since the beginning of the week, protests have been escalating in Aden over long power cuts due to fuel shortages at power stations and the inability of stations and the government and local authorities to address these crises over the years.
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, security forces moved to disperse the demonstrations, beating protesters with batons and cordoning off entrances to some streets.
Aden, with a population of one million, is ruled by the Southern Transitional Council(STC), a group backed by the United Arab Emirates. The city is also the seat of the internationally recognized government, which has been fighting the Houthis since 2014.
In recent weeks, electricity power cuts have reached 10 hours a day in Aden and up to 20 hours in the neighboring province of Abyan, according to residents.
