U.S calls on Iran to stop “unprecedented” arms transfers to the Houthis

The United States has called on Iran to stop transferring “unprecedented amounts” of weapons to the Houthis in Yemen, which has allowed them to carry out “reckless attacks” on ships in the Red Sea and elsewhere.

“If the Security Council wants to make progress towards ending the civil war in Yemen, it must work collectively to demand that Iran cease its destabilizing role and let it know that it will not be able to hide behind the Houthis,” said US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood to the UN Security Council.

Wood added that there is ample evidence that Iran is “providing advanced weapons, including ballistic missiles and cruise missiles to the Houthis,” in violation of UN sanctions.

“To underscore the Council’s concern about continued arms embargo violations, we must do more to strengthen implementation of sanctions and deter violators,” he added.
