YEMEN MONITOR/News Room

The head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council on Sunday issued a decree appointing former Defense Minister Mahmoud al-Subaihi as an advisor to the head of the council for defense and security affairs.

The official Yemeni news agency, Saba, reported that “President Al-Alim issued a decree  appointing Lieutenant General Mahmoud Ahmed Salem al-Subaihi as an advisor to the head of the Presidential Leadership Council for defense and security affairs.”

The decision comes days after Al-Alim honored al-Subaihi with the September 26 Medal in appreciation of his national and struggle roles in confronting the Houthis.

Last year, 2023, the Houthi group released three of the four leaders whom the UN Security Council had called for their release in a UN resolution, including Brigadier General Mahmoud al-Subaihi; as part of a prisoner and detainee exchange deal between the two sides.

In late March 2015, the group captured al-Subaihi, Brigadier General Nasser Mansour Hadi, commander of the Special Forces and brother of former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, and the commander of the 119th Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Rajab, along with others in the town of al-Aanad north of Lahj Governorate (south), during their leadership of a battle against Houthi forces.
