The United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia have discussed ways to make progress on the peace process in Yemen and stop Houthi attacks on shipping vessels in the Red and Arabian Seas and the Gulf of Aden.
The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said on Friday that the Minister for the Middle East affairs Lord Tariq Ahmad had discussed developments in Yemen with Saudi Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed Al Jaber in a phone call.
In a statement on “X” platform, it added that the talks focused on “joint work on making progress on the peace process in Yemen, ways to improve the Yemeni economy, and ways to stop Houthi attacks on international shipping vessels.”
On Thursday, Allianz Commercial insurance said that the Houthis had attacked more than 50 commercial ships in the Red Sea between November 19 and the end of last April.
Meanwhile, the Houthi leader said on Thursday that his group had targeted 112 Israeli, American and British ships since launching its operations in support of Gaza in November 2023.
Since last November, the Houthis have continued their attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In response, the United States and Britain have launched attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen and re-designated the group as a terrorist organization in response to their attacks on commercial ships
