MAERSK: Situation is worsening in the Red Sea

Maersk, the maritime shipping company, stated on Monday that the disruption of container shipping in the Red Sea is worsening and is expected to reduce industry capacity between the Far East and Europe by approximately 15 to 20 % in the second quarter this year.
The company, regarded as a perfect scale for global trade, mentioned last week that disruptions in shipping due to Houthi rebel attacks on vessels in the Red Sea are expected to continue until at least the end of the year.
Maersk informed its customers in a warning: “The danger zone has expanded, and the attacks are reaching further.”
They continued: “This has forced our vessels to extend their journeys further, resulting in additional time and costs to transport your cargo to its destination in the current sitution.”
The indirect effects included congestion and so-called ship bunching, where multiple vessels arrive at the port simultaneously, in addition to equipment and capacity shortages.
“We are doing everything we can to enhance reliability, including sailing faster and adding capacity,” Maersk said, adding that so far it has leased more than 125,000 additional containers.
