The Houthi armed group claimed, on Wednesday evening, to have targeted a US destroyer and ship in the Gulf of Aden, and an Israeli ship in the Indian Ocean, with missiles and drones.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said that “the group’s forces targeted the US ship ‘MAERSK YORKTOWN’ in the Gulf of Aden with a number of appropriate naval missiles, and the strike was accurate.”
He added that “the drone air force carried out two military operations, one of which targeted a US warship in the Gulf of Aden with a number of drones.”
He pointed out that “the other operation targeted the Israeli ‘MSC VERACRUZ’ cruise ship in the Indian Ocean with a number of drones, and the two operations achieved their goals successfully.”
Earlier, the British Trade Operations Authority said that it had received “a report of a new incident off the coast of Aden city in the Gulf of Aden.”
The British Trade Operations Authority stated that “the captain of a merchant ship southeast of Djibouti reported an explosion near it without damage or injuries.”
The Telegraph newspaper quoted the British Bureau of Statistics as saying that “shipping traffic in the Red Sea has decreased by two-thirds amid escalating tensions in the region.”
Last Thursday, Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi announced the targeting of 98 ships in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean since the group’s operations began in November 2023.
Since November, the Houthis have continued their attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In response, the United States and Britain launched attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen, and re-listed the group on terrorist organizations lists, due to their attacks on commercial ships.
