Abdul Rahman Saleh, the Director General of the Health Office in Taiz city, announced on Wednesday that the city is witnessing a widespread outbreak of cholera, amid the ongoing deterioration in the health sector in Yemen due to the conflict in the country.

Saleh called on the Yemeni government to develop emergency plans to address health crises and epidemics resulting from war and natural disasters.

He emphasized the importance of cooperation among relevant executive offices in combating the cholera epidemic, taking greater action, and implementing solutions and treatments to limit the spread of the disease among citizens in response to the emergency plan formed by the local authority under the leadership of the governor of the province, Nabeel Shamsan.

About a week ago, health sources reported three deaths and more than three hundred cases of cholera in Taiz province.

According to the German news agency, a health official in Taiz stated that health authorities have documented cases of death and infection since the beginning of the current year.

Last Monday, local authorities in Taiz announced preventive measures to contain cholera in coordination with various concerned entities, working to coordinate efforts and intensify awareness campaigns about the causes of the epidemic and how to prevent it.

The World Health Organization reported approximately 508 cases of cholera and two deaths during the first two months of the current year.

The World Health Organization had previously reported over 8,000 cases of cholera, including 21 deaths, in Yemen in 2023.

About 5 million Yemeni children suffer from severe malnutrition amid the ongoing conflict, while many of them live in poverty and diseases, deprived of basic rights, according to UN reports.

The new outbreak of cholera comes amidst the ongoing deterioration in the health sector, especially in areas under Houthi control.
