Hadramawt Geology warns of possible rockfalls in Mukalla due to the atmospheric depression

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The Geology and Mineral Resources Authority in Hadramawt Governorate on Wednesday warned of possible rockfalls in the city of Mukalla (the center of the governorate) as a result of the atmospheric depression affecting the eastern Yemeni governorates.

Director of the authority Faiz Ahmed Basra warned citizens who live in homes near the mountains of the possibility of rockfalls on the paths of floodwaters and rains.

Basra explained that “urban construction in mountainous areas under rock slopes poses a danger to its residents.”

The old city of Mukalla is considered one of the areas exposed to rockfalls due to the presence of unstable rock masses located on flood channels. The threatened areas also include the sea road to Mukalla port, which poses a danger to the passage of vehicles during heavy rains due to the presence of cracks and cracks of different directions in the rock formation overlooking the road.

The possibility of some loose rocks falling increases with the continuation of heavy rains, causing damage to the residents of those areas and road users.

It is worth noting that there have been previous historical and recent rockfall incidents in the areas mentioned above.

On Wednesday morning, several areas in Wadi Hadramawt witnessed heavy rains, which caused floods to flow in the valleys and roads.

A number of Yemeni governorates, including Hadramawt and Al Mahrah (east of the country), are expected to experience heavy rains in the coming hours.

Earlier, Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to overcome the possible repercussions of the low pressure system in the eastern governorates of the country.

The official Yemeni news agency “Saba” said that “Bin Mubarak followed up on the path of the atmospheric depression expected to head towards the eastern governorates in the coming hours, most notably Al Mahrah and Al-Wadi and Al-Sahra directorates in Hadramawt Governorate, and the extent of the readiness of local authorities and emergency rooms to deal with the possible repercussions of the atmospheric depression”.
