Yemeni Minister Stresses Importance of Supporting Efforts to Resume Crude Oil Exports to Mitigate Economic Collapse

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Yemeni Minister of Oil and Minerals, Saeed Al-Shamasi, emphasized the importance of supporting efforts to resume crude oil exports, which have been halted since Houthi attacks targeted export ports in the governorates of Hadhramaut and Shabwa.

This came during his meeting with Roxana Bazargan, Head of the Political Affairs Section at the Office of the UN Envoy to Yemen, and economic advisor Dirk Jan, according to the official Yemeni News Agency.

Al-Shamasi reaffirmed the political leadership’s commitment to ensuring the availability of petroleum products and household gas for citizens across all Yemeni governorates, including Houthi-controlled areas.

The minister also praised the U.S. administration’s decision to ban Houthi imports of petroleum and gas products, stressing that the Ministry of Oil and Minerals is ready to fulfill its duty in securing energy needs for all of Yemeni governorates.

In October, the Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen in Aden, Ahmed Ghalib Al-Ma’abqi, stated that Yemen had lost over six billion dollars in revenues over the past 30 months due to the suspension of oil and gas exports following Houthi attacks on eastern oil export ports.

In October 2022, the Houthi group launched a drone attack on  Al-Dhabba oil port in Hadhramaut, forcing the legitimate government to halt oil and gas exports.
