“Grunberg” Warns Of The Return Of Conflict In Yemen And Calls For The Release Of Detainees

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grunberg, warned that the current trajectory for Yemen is deeply concerning, indicating fears of a return to a comprehensive conflict.
In his briefing to the UN Security Council meeting on Thursday, he confirmed that the current phase sees an increase in concerns over military tensions, which may plunge Yemen back into another spiral of conflict that civilians will pay a heavy price for.
The UN envoy reiterated his call for the parties to refrain from threatening military force and taking retaliatory measures that could drag Yemen back into a widespread conflict. He also renewed his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees, especially during the month of Ramadan.
Grunberg emphasized the necessity of addressing three main challenges to end the conflict in Yemen, the first of which is the need for the parties to agree on a comprehensive ceasefire, followed by the establishment of a mechanism for its implementation.
He also highlighted the importance of making tough decisions regarding the deteriorating economic situation and the necessity of involving all Yemeni parties in the political process.
At the end of his speech, coinciding with the arrival of Ramadan, Grunberg reiterated his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees, noting that the absence of loved ones from their families during this blessed month leaves a deep impact on families still living in sorrow due to the detention of their members.
