Yemen Welcomes Entry into Force of Decision Designating Houthis as a “Terrorist Organization”

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the announcement by the U.S. Department of State that the designation of the Houthi group as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization” (FTO) has entered into force.

The ministry considered in a statement, carried by the official Yemeni News Agency, that this decision represents an important step to confront the threats posed by these terrorist militias supported by the Iranian regime.

The statement issued by the ministry indicated that the decision is an effective tool to limit the material and financial support for these terrorist militias, and the Yemeni government called on the international community to take similar steps to dry up the sources of Houthi funding and arming.

The statement also expressed the Yemeni government’s thanks to the US for its firm commitment to supporting the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni people in their quest for peace.

The statement affirmed the Yemeni government’s readiness to fully cooperate with international partners to ensure the implementation of this decision in a way that serves the interests of the Yemeni people and enhances peace and security in the region.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of State announced the entry into force of the decision designating the Houthi group as a foreign terrorist organization, in a step that comes in implementation of one of the first promises made by President Donald Trump since taking office.

The U.S. State Department said in its statement that the Houthis’ activities pose a threat to the security of civilians and American personnel in the Middle East, and also endanger the safety of our closest regional partners and the stability of global maritime trade, in accordance with Executive Order 14175 issued by President Trump.

The statement pointed out that since 2023, the Houthis have carried out hundreds of attacks against commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, in addition to targeting US forces defending freedom of navigation and regional partners.
