UNESCO Director-General Condemns Killing of Journalist Mohammed Al-Maqari by Armed Group in Eastern Yemen

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay condemned the killing of journalist Mohammed Qaed Al-Maqari in Yemen on December 28, 2024.
She stated, “I condemn the killing of journalist Mohammed Qaed Al-Maqari and demand that the perpetrators be held accountable for his death.”
She added, “Journalists covering events in conflict zones play a vital role in providing information to the world, putting their lives at great risk.”
She continued, “All parties must ensure their safety in accordance with international law.”
Mohammed Qaed Al-Maqari was a correspondent for Yemen Today TV. He was kidnapped by an armed group on October 12, 2015, while covering a protest in Mukalla, the capital of Hadramawt region.
News reported his execution on December 28, 2024, after nine years of enforced disappearance.
UNESCO works to promote the safety of journalists through global awareness of their professional role, capacity building, and coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
