Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
A health report revealed today, Saturday, a significant increase in the number of psychiatric patients in Taiz Governorate during 2024.
The Taiz Psychiatric and Mental Health Hospital said it recorded a noticeable increase in the number of patients during 2024, as it received 8,602 cases, with a significant increase after the opening of the Al-Houban road, which facilitated patients’ access to medical care.
According to the hospital: Epilepsy patients rank first with 2,012 cases, and they are in dire need of sustained support in medicines, psychotherapy, and behavioral rehabilitation to ensure the stability of their condition and improve their quality of life.
The hospital director, Dr. Adel Mulhi, confirmed that the hospital continues to provide its services despite the challenges, calling on health authorities and support organizations to provide medical personnel, raise the operating budget, and enhance nutrition and hygiene services, to ensure the continued provision of high-quality mental health care.
It continues to provide its services free of charge, including examinations, treatment, inpatient services, and psychological support, and recently witnessed a qualitative leap through the rehabilitation and restoration of inpatient departments and outpatient clinics, in addition to equipping an indoor gym and establishing football and basketball courts, with the aim of improving the therapeutic environment for patients and supporting their psychological and behavioral rehabilitation.
There are 210 inpatients in the hospital, amid challenges that include a shortage of specialized medical staff, a weak operating budget, and nutrition and hygiene needs, which increases pressure on the services provided.
