Guterres Calls on Houthis to Release Abducted Humanitarian Workers
Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, called on the Houthis to respect the staff of international organizations operating in Yemen, reiterating the need to release the abducted employees.
“The Houthis must know that there are limits to the unacceptable arbitrary actions they have committed, especially with regard to UN personnel who are helping the Yemeni people,” Guterres said in a television interview on Friday.
He warned that the continuation of these practices could hinder the delivery of vital aid to millions of Yemenis who depend on it.
Regarding the possibility of humanitarian work in Yemen being affected by the US administration’s redesignation of the Houthi group as a foreign terrorist organization, Guterres said that the United Nations is studying the possibility of continuing to provide aid to Yemenis regardless of the decision.
Guterres pointed out that the Houthis’ targeting of ships in the Red Sea did not help the Palestinians, but rather caused disruption to maritime navigation, which negatively affected the countries of the region, including Egypt.
The UN Secretary-General called on those who support the Houthis or those who are in contact with them to participate in serious efforts aimed at restoring peace in Yemen.
He stressed that the United Nations was close to starting this process after the understandings reached by Saudi Arabia with the Houthis, but the Houthis’ targeting of ships hampered those efforts.
