“Grundberg” Discusses Yemen Ceasefire Planning with Saudi Military Committee
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The Office of the Special Envoy for Yemen held a meeting with representatives of the Joint Forces Command in the Military Coordination Committee from January 21 to 23 in Amman to discuss various aspects of the planning necessary to achieve and sustain a ceasefire.
According to a UN statement, the meeting is part of the Special Envoy’s Office ongoing efforts to work on the security track. This meeting follows a previous meeting in December of last year with representatives of the Yemeni government’s Military Coordination Committee.
Since the six-month truce in 2022, the efforts of the Military Coordination Committee delegations, facilitated by the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, have been central to efforts to de-escalate between the parties.
The discussions, according to the statement, focused on exchanging views on the current security context in Yemen and the region, as well as the priorities that must be addressed before embarking on a ceasefire process, including confidence-building measures between the parties.
Serhad Fatah, Deputy Head of Mission to Yemen, said during the meeting: “The Special Envoy’s Office is working intensively with all actors to lay the groundwork for a ceasefire that is not merely a temporary cessation of hostilities, but a step towards a sustainable peace process. We are working closely with all stakeholders to address the necessary requirements for peace and to ensure that future ceasefires lead to meaningful political dialogue and humanitarian relief.”
These discussions are part of a series of sessions provided to delegations participating in the Military Coordination Committee, facilitated by leading international experts in the field of ceasefires.
