Al-Zubaidi Attacks Yemeni Unity and Sees Trump’s Return to Power as an Opportunity to Curb the Houthis
Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council member Aidros Al-Zubaidi stated on Tuesday that Donald Trump’s return to the presidency of the US marks a critical turning point that will help curb the power of the Iran-backed Houthis, whom he said are threatening regional stability and maritime security.
This came during an interview on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Al-Zubaidi added that Trump’s strong leadership and willingness to use military force sharply contrast with the administration of his predecessor Joe Biden, which he said allowed the Houthi militia to strengthen its power and military capabilities and expand its influence beyond Yemen.
He continued: “We are supporters and admirers of Trump’s policies because he has the decision-making power necessary to govern the US and the world,” adding, “I expect talks with the incoming administration to begin soon.”
Regarding Yemeni unity, Al-Zubaidi, who also serves as the president of the STC advocating for the separation of southern Yemen, said, “The continuation of Yemeni unity is no longer possible, and the solution is the independence of the south as it was in 1990. Discussing the unity of Yemen contradicts the reality on the ground.”
He added, “When we become two states, the conflict will be resolved.”
On the impacts of the war, Al-Zubaidi emphasized that “the war has cost Yemen a lot and has led to the complete collapse of the economy and a sharp decline in the value of the currency,” noting that government employees’ salaries now range between $50 to $60 per month.
