EU Urges Houthis to Cease Red Sea Attacks and Return to Peace Process
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The EU on Monday reiterated its steadfast support for UN-led peace efforts in Yemen.
In a statement during an open debate at the UN Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, the EU urged all parties, especially the Houthis, to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions, and engage constructively and meaningfully with the UN Special Envoy, Hans Grundberg, to achieve a lasting peace and implement the UN roadmap.
It reaffirmed its continued support for the Yemeni government in its efforts to move forward with reforms and progress towards stability in the country.
It condemned the destabilizing activities across the Middle East by Iran and its proxies through terrorist and armed groups.
The EU also condemned the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, as they contribute to regional escalation and pose a serious threat to international security, trade, and freedom of navigation, as well as the environment.
It expressed deep concern over the recent escalation. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times in accordance with international humanitarian law.
The EU reiterated its condemnation of the Houthis’ arrest of UN staff, NGO workers, and diplomatic missions in Yemen and called on the group to immediately and unconditionally release all detainees.
It continued to call on the Houthis to cease attacks in the Red Sea and the Middle East and North Africa region and return to the UN-led peace process.
