Egyptian MP Warns Houthis After Gaza Ceasefire

Yemen Monitor/Cairo/Agencies:

Egyptian Member of Parliament Mustafa Bakry has issued a warning to the Houthi armed group against continuing attacks in the Red Sea following the implementation of a ceasefire in Gaza.

Bakry, who is also a media personality, stated on his official X account that “Egypt lost $7 billion in one year due to the halt of ship transit through the Suez Canal.”

He continued, “Now that the ceasefire in Gaza has come into effect, what will be the stance of the Houthis?” He added, “I believe that if the prevention of ships from passing through  Bab el-Mandeb Strait continues, then the target will be Egypt.”

Bakry said that if this threat to navigation continues after the cessation of the war in Gaza, “I do not think Egypt will remain silent in the face of a threat to its vital interests.”

The MP warned that “Egypt has remained silent in the past due to the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza, but now that the aggression has stopped, there is a different situation.”

The Houthis have targeted more than 200 commercial ships with missiles and drones since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023. They seized one ship and sank two in the campaign, which also resulted in the death of four sailors. A US-led coalition has also intercepted other missiles and drones in the Red Sea or failed to reach their targets, which also included Western military vessels.
