UN Envoy to Yemen Arrives in Tehran Amid Houthi Violations of Ceasing fire
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Sunday to discuss enhancing peace in Yemen, coinciding with the Houthi militia’s violation of the ongoing ceasefire with the legitimate Yemeni government forces.
Grundberg’s office said in a brief statement that “following his visits to Muscat and Sana’a last week, the UN Special Envoy arrived in Tehran today.”
The statement added that Grundberg’s visit to Tehran comes as part of a series of regional and national meetings he is holding within the framework of his mediation efforts to promote peace in Yemen.
The UN envoy to Yemen visited the Omani capital, Muscat, last week, before visiting Sana’a to meet with Houthi leaders, in an effort to resume the peace process and urge the group to stop regional escalation and release UN and international organization staff, as well as former employees of diplomatic missions.
The envoy stressed the importance of de-escalation at the national and regional levels to foster a conducive environment for dialogue. He urged, according to the statement, the need to agree on concrete measures to move the dialogue forward through a political process to achieve sustainable peace and stability throughout Yemen.
Yesterday, Saturday, the Yemeni army’s military media confirmed that government forces had inflicted heavy human and material losses on the Houthis over the past 24 hours, across the fronts of Marib, Al-Jawf, and Taiz.
