Aden Appeals Court Acquits Journalist Maher and Orders His Release
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The Appeals Chamber of the Criminal Court in the temporary Yemeni capital, Aden, issued a ruling on Wednesday acquitting journalist Ahmed Maher of all charges against him, overturning the initial verdict that sentenced him to imprisonment and ordering his immediate release.
This came in a session held by the court to consider the case of journalist Maher, who has been illegally detained since his abduction in August 2022.
The verdict stated that “all charges against journalist Ahmed Maher are baseless” and ordered the complete dismissal of the charges against journalist Maher and his immediate release.
On August 6, 2022, the Transitional Council forces kidnapped journalist Ahmed Maher from his mother’s home in Dar Sa’ad district of Aden Governorate, forcibly disappeared him for several months, subjected him to psychological and physical torture, and leveled a number of false charges against him.
On September 5, 2022, media outlets affiliated with the Transitional Council released a video clip showing Ahmed Maher forced to make fabricated confessions, and he appeared to have been tortured.
