Socotra Elders Reject Emirati-Backed Self-Rule Declaration

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Sheikhs, notables, and dignitaries of Socotra Archipelago Governorate have publicly rejected a recent declaration by an Emirati-backed group calling for self-rule in the Yemeni archipelago.

In an extraordinary meeting chaired by Sheikh Issa Salem bin Yaqout, the Sheikh of Sheikhs in Socotra Governorate, the attendees discussed the current situation in the governorate, particularly the economic and political tensions resulting from certain individuals adopting and unilaterally declaring suspicious projects with foreign affiliations, disregarding the governorate’s people and its components.

The meeting reached a consensus on several points related to the various issues, most notably their adherence to unity, cohesion, and the preservation of the social fabric, as well as rejecting all forms of division and fragmentation and maintaining the sovereignty of the governorate to ensure a secure future for its people.

They also categorically rejected all the reckless calls for self-rule that were announced in the past few days, affirming that the decision regarding Socotra’s fate and future lies with all its people.

The Sheikhs of Socotra emphasized the continuation of all forms of work, communication, and coordination with individuals, components, and national figures who have influence and a say, in order to consult and hold inclusive meetings with the aim of reaching a unified and comprehensive opinion that meets all the aspirations of the archipelago’s people.

The Sheikhs of Socotra appealed to the Presidential Council and the government to respond fully and urgently to previous calls to fulfill their constitutional, legal, and humanitarian duties towards the people of the archipelago in light of the difficult living conditions faced by citizens in the governorate.
