Anticipated UN Security Council Session to Discuss Yemen Developments
Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:
The UN Security Council is holding a meeting today, Wednesday, to discuss the military and humanitarian developments in Yemen, including the continued stalemate in the political process, the deteriorating economic situation, and the impact of regional escalation.
The meeting will begin with an open session followed by closed consultations focusing on the humanitarian and economic situation, as well as the stalled roadmap talks for nearly a year, and issues related to the Houthi militia’s detention of UN staff, civil society workers, and diplomatic missions.
Both the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, and the new Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Thomas W. Greene, are scheduled to provide briefings during the open session on the latest developments in the political, military, humanitarian, and human rights situation in Yemen.
Grundberg is expected to highlight the negative impacts of rising regional tensions on mediation efforts aimed at reactivating the stalled political process, warning that any delay in reaching a roadmap for peace could lead Yemen to slip back into the cycle of war.
