Biden: Houthis Still Pose a Threat to American Forces in the Red Sea
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
U.S. President Joe Biden stated that “Houthi militants still pose a threat by carrying out future attacks on American forces and their military vessels and against maritime traffic in the Red Sea region.”
In a message to Congress yesterday, Friday, regarding the War Powers Report, Biden explained that in response to this threat, “U.S. forces have conducted separate strikes against facilities, locations, and equipment in Yemen that support and facilitate Houthi militant attacks in the region.”
He added that these strikes “protect US personnel and assets and weaken and disrupt the Houthis’ ability to carry out future attacks against the US and vessels operating in the Red Sea, which could lead to increased destabilization of the region and threaten American strategic interests.”
Biden noted that since November 2023, Houthi militants based in Yemen have engaged in a series of attacks against U.S. forces, including vessels, aircraft, and commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden.
These attacks have posed a threat to the safety of American forces, commercial vessels, and their crews, as well as to regional political and economic stability and the rights and freedoms of navigation.
