Human Rights and Political Condemnation of Security Forces Attack on Teachers in Shabwah, Eastern Yemen

There has been a wave of union, human rights, and political condemnations of the attack by security forces affiliated with the governor of Shabwah on a number of male and female teachers during a peaceful protest to demand their basic rights.
The Yemeni Teachers’ Syndicate condemned the attack on the teachers of Shabwah Governorate, affirming that attacking teachers is a flagrant violation of the law that guarantees citizens’ right to peaceful expression of their demands, rights, and freedoms.
In a statement, the syndicate held the local authority in Shabwah, headed by Governor Awad Muhammad bin Al-Wazir, fully responsible for the incident and called for a transparent and immediate investigation into the incident and the accountability of those responsible for the attack.
It also called for responding to the legitimate demands of male and female teachers and working to improve their living conditions to ensure the stability of the educational process in the governorate.
In the same context, the syndicate affirmed its full solidarity with the male and female teachers of Shabwah and threatened to escalate if their demands are not met, including resorting to a general and comprehensive strike at the level of the republic.
The syndicate supported all the trade union steps that the branch of the syndicate and teachers in Shabwah may take in protest against the incident.
The syndicate called on local and international human rights organizations, in addition to the media, to shed light on the violations committed against teachers, pointing out that the role of teachers in building the nation and educating its generations cannot be ignored.
The syndicate called for urgent intervention by the head of the Presidential Leadership Council and members of the government to curb these attacks that undermine the democratic system and the rights of teachers.
In the same context, the Coordination Council of Political Parties in Shabwah Governorate condemned the suppression of peaceful activities guaranteed by the constitution and the law, and called for the need to respect freedom of opinion and expression, and affirmed the need to reveal the destiny of the forcibly disappeared.
The Coordination Council of Political Parties in Shabwah, during its periodic meeting, called on the local authorities and political components to stand by the people of the governorate.
It called on the government to assume its moral responsibility and solve this problem, pay salaries on time, adjust the salary structure, and assist needy families.
The council praised the role of parties and political components in the governorate, which have long initiated the principle of dialogue and coordination between parties based on common denominators and the higher interest of the governorate and its people, emphasizing the need to continue dialogue and communication in this regard.
On Tuesday, security forces in the city of Ataq, the capital of Shabwah Governorate, used force to disperse a protest organized by male and female teachers of the governorate near the governor’s office to demand the payment of their overdue salaries for two months.
