Yemeni Government Suspends Activities of Yemeni Journalists Syndicate in Aden
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor in the Yemeni government has issued a decision to suspend the activities of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate in Aden, the temporary capital of the country.
The ministry justified its decision by stating that the syndicate has failed to regularize its legal status in the southern city and has not responded to calls to relocate its headquarters to Aden or to hold an electoral session under the ministry’s supervision.
The ministry indicated that the syndicate has been operating in Aden and areas under the government’s control “illegally,” necessitating intervention to regulate its work in accordance with local laws.
For his part, the head of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate in Aden, Mahmoud Thabit, expressed his categorical rejection of the decisions of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor to suspend the syndicate’s activities in Aden, describing these measures as part of a series of restrictions targeting the syndicate to prevent it from carrying out its activities.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Social Affairs is affiliated with the STC as part of the government’s power-sharing arrangement.
In March 2023, armed groups affiliated with STC stormed the headquarters of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate and transformed it into what they call the “Southern Journalists Syndicate”.
