The internationally recognized Yemeni government has called on the international community and allied countries to support its efforts to address the economic crisis and halt the ongoing depreciation of the national currency.
This came in a statement by Yemen’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Sa’adi, before the Security Council at an open session on the situation in the Middle East (Yemen).
The Yemeni representative affirmed the legitimate government’s commitment to a comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace approach, and to achieving peace to ensure security, stability, development, and a normal life for Yemenis, and reaching a political solution to the conflict in accordance with the agreed-upon references.
In its statement, the government renewed its support for the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for the Secretary-General, and all regional and international efforts aimed at ending the conflict and achieving peace in Yemen, especially the efforts of Saudi Arabia and Oman aimed at contributing to paving the way for a political solution and addressing the Yemeni crisis.
The Yemeni government affirmed that “the Houthi group has repeatedly shown a lack of commitment to the path of peace, the interests of Yemen and its people, and continues, in light of the international community’s laxity towards it and its supporters, the Iranian regime, to evade the requirements of peace, and continues its military escalation and threats to international navigation in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and its catastrophic consequences on the marine environment, the economic and humanitarian situation in Yemen and the countries bordering the Red Sea.”
The Yemeni government renewed its call on the international community to provide support to address the economic and humanitarian situation, and to lay the foundations for long-term economic recovery. This includes not only immediate humanitarian assistance to alleviate suffering but also stronger accountability mechanisms, especially in areas controlled by the Houthis.
It stated that it “continues to work on the path of economic, financial, and administrative reforms and addressing issues related to the lives and livelihoods of citizens and alleviating their suffering in accordance with available resources, and implementing strict measures to enhance accountability, transparency, and combat corruption, and develop economic resources and optimal utilization of external assistance and directing it according to government needs and priorities, with the aim of maintaining economic stability and controlling the exchange rate of the national currency…”.
