Liberian-flagged Chemical Tanker Targeted in Deadly Attacks in the Red Sea

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom

The British Navy has reported that a series of suspected Houthi attacks targeted a vessel in the Red Sea on Thursday.

The attack comes as the armed group continues to threaten ships traversing the Red Sea, a waterway that once saw the passage of a trillion dollars’ worth of goods annually but has been disrupted by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, including the recent Israel-Gaza war.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said a ship in the Red Sea, sailing along the East African coast, was first hit by a projectile that damaged the vessel but did not cause a fire or injuries. The private security firm Embark identified the ship as a Liberian-flagged chemical tanker.

Subsequently, at least two more projectiles landed in the water around the ship, which was a significant distance from Hodeidah, the Houthi-controlled port from which many of the rebels’ attacks originate.

The group has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but it may take hours or even days for them to acknowledge their attacks.
