Local authorities in Yemen’s Taiz governorate announced on Saturday that 5,000 families have been affected by flash floods that swept through the Jabal Habshi district on Thursday evening.
The district authorities, which are under the control of the Yemeni government, said in a statement that “unprecedented flash floods lasted for six hours on Thursday evening in the Jabal Habshi district, causing significant damage to many citizens’ homes, both fully and partially.”
The statement added that these floods “swept away dozens of agricultural lands that were about to be harvested, supporting more than 5,000 families. These families now have nothing left as they relied heavily on these farms.”
The statement pointed out that the floods “caused a near-complete cut-off of the main roads connecting to the center of Taiz governorate, in addition to a complete cut-off of secondary roads connecting villages within the district, and caused significant damage to educational and health facilities and water utilities, leaving a humanitarian disaster.”
The statement issued a “distress call and an urgent appeal to the governor of Taiz Governorate, Nabil Shamsan, and the concerned authorities, international organizations, and countries, to provide relief to the people of the district who have suffered severe damage and significant material losses due to the disasters of rain and flash floods.”
Activists have shared images on social media showing the damage to roads and farms in the district.
Jabal Habshi district is one of the largest districts in Taiz governorate.
