The UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, discussed supporting peace efforts in Yemen with British officials at the end of his visit to the British capital, London, according to a statement from his office on Friday.
The envoy’s office said that Grundberg discussed with Hamish Falconer (Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa) and Anneliese Dodds (Minister for International Development) ways to enhance international efforts to support Yemen’s path towards stability, ensuring a coordinated approach to overcoming current challenges and making progress towards lasting solutions.
According to the statement, the UN envoy highlighted the economic challenges, the escalation of tensions in the Red Sea, and the broader regional dynamics, emphasizing the impact of these escalations on the peace process in Yemen.
Grundberg said, “United regional and international support for UN-led mediation efforts is essential to effectively meet the urgent needs of the Yemeni people and pave the way for a peace process that makes any progress permanent and irreversible.”
He added, “I remain committed to reinforcing the Secretary-General’s call for the immediate release of all detained colleagues, and I call for their immediate release to enable them to resume their vital work and to be reunited with their families who wait for their safe return.”
For his part, Minister Falconer affirmed his country’s strong support for the UN envoy in his pursuit of a political settlement to ensure lasting peace in Yemen.
In a statement on X, he called on the Houthi group to engage meaningfully with the UN process, release detained humanitarian workers, and stop their dangerous and destabilizing attacks in the Red Sea.
These meetings come within a series of intensive meetings that took place in London over the past few days, where British officials met with the US envoy to Yemen, Lender King, the US Ambassador Steven Fagin, and the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed al-Jaber. These meetings were dedicated to discussing the Yemeni issue and emphasizing the importance of supporting peace efforts in Yemen, as it is important for regional stability.
