Yemeni social media users have launched a widespread solidarity campaign for the people of Melhan Directorate in Al-Mahwit Governorate, which has been devastated by heavy rains and floods over the past three days.
The governorate has witnessed a humanitarian disaster following the bursting of three dams, leading to flash floods that swept through vast areas of the Tihama Plain.
Local sources reported that the floods caused houses to collapse on their inhabitants, resulting in casualties, most of whom were women and children.
Preliminary reports indicate that the death toll has exceeded 25 so far, while rescue teams continue search operations for the missing amid difficult conditions.
The local authority in the district has launched a distress call to the concerned authorities to intervene quickly and rescue the areas of Hamdan and Al-Qebla, which have been hit by disasters and casualties as a result of the floods and heavy rains.
The authority emphasized the importance of accelerating efforts to mitigate the damage caused by the floods, which have resulted in 24 deaths and the loss of dozens more, as well as the displacement of citizens’ homes, agricultural lands, and the disruption of roads and the explosion of water storage tanks causing the area of Hamdan to become a major concern due to ongoing landslides.
The authority pointed out that the areas of Hamdan and Al-Qebla have become disaster zones and require urgent provision of needs for the affected families, including food, emergency shelter, and the evacuation of threatened families to safe areas, along with providing for their needs.
Activists have launched a distress call to all citizens, authorities, merchants, and expatriates to intervene urgently to save the people of the district, especially the areas of Al-Qebla and Hamdan.
