Nine Killed, Homes Destroyed in Rima and Hajjah Due to Floods

Yemen Monitor/Reuters

Local sources and residents reported on Thursday that nine people have died in the governorates of Rima and Hajjah in northwestern Yemen due to heavy rains that caused flash floods as a result of a low-pressure system affecting the region.

Residents and a local official in the mountainous Rima Governorate told Reuters that the floods and heavy rains caused significant damage to public and private property, with a large number of houses, main and secondary roads being damaged, and drainage channels being blocked.

Sources indicated that the heavy rains and flash floods resulted in the deaths of six people, the destruction of hundreds of homes, and the cutting off of dozens of roads connecting districts and villages.

In Hajjah Governorate, bordering Saudi Arabia, two brothers and a baby girl died in separate incidents due to heavy rains in the mountainous governorate in northwestern Yemen.

Rima, Hajjah, and Hodeidah are among the governorates most affected by the consequences of heavy rains, flash floods, and lightning strikes that have been experienced in these three governorates, which are under the control of the Houthi group, since early July.

The Houthi group stated on Wednesday that at least 86 people have died, and more than 33,000 families have been affected by the heavy rains and floods that have recently hit the three governorates.
