The European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR ASPIDES) announced yesterday, Monday, that its fleet has successfully destroyed 18 drones, one Houthi-controlled boat, and four Houthi ballistic missiles that were targeting international shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The mission added, “We have completed six months of operations in the Red Sea region, facing various challenges. However, the steadfast commitment and hard work of the mission members have led to numerous achievements in the area of operations.”
The mission indicated that it had responded to over 300 requests for protection and escort of commercial vessels while traversing the southern part of the Red Sea, an area where international shipping has been subjected to attacks by the Houthi group.
The mission reiterated its commitment to continuing its tasks of maintaining maritime security, ensuring full compliance with international law regarding the protection of freedom of navigation and the protection of commercial vessels targeted by attacks at sea or from the air, and securing their passage through the Red Sea.
On February 19th, the EU announced the launch of a European naval mission named “ASPIDES,” stating that it was aimed at protecting commercial vessels in the Red Sea from attacks by the Houthi group.
