On World Seafarers’ Day, International Calls for the Immediate Release of the Galaxy Leader Ship and Its Crew

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is celebrating World Seafarers’ Day today, highlighting the vital role of seafarers in maintaining global supply chains and the importance of ensuring their safety.
The IMO website said that IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez praised the approximately 2 million seafarers working in global markets.
In his video message, Dominguez acknowledged the challenges faced by seafarers, saying: “Seafarers have been painfully tested in recent years – facing acts of hostility from piracy or in conflict zones.”
He added: “I humbly appreciate the resilience and sacrifices of seafarers in the name of work.” He emphasized the fundamental nature of shipping in global trade, stressing that without seafarers, there would be no maritime shipping.
According to the website: UN Secretary-General António Guterres also celebrated this day, commending the crucial role that seafarers play in ensuring the delivery of essential goods.
He said: “Seafarers play a vital role in ensuring the smooth flow of essential goods that ultimately reach markets and homes and our tables… but their lives have been put to the test in the face of serious threats. Let us honor them together for their essential work and support their safety.”
The IMO highlighted the recent wave of attacks on ships in the Red Sea, as a result of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Since November 2023, these attacks have resulted in numerous casualties and injuries among seafarers. Dominguez called for the immediate and unconditional release of the Galaxy Leader ship and its crew, who have been held captive for more than eight months.
He added: “On this Seafarers’ Day, let us remember those who have lost their lives while carrying out their duties, while serving on these ships. Their dedication and sacrifices should not be overlooked.” He affirmed that attacks on innocent people can never be jus
