A judicial court in Aden on Tuesday sentenced a number of Yemeni military leaders to death for fighting against the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council in 2019, according to a judicial source.
According to the source, the court sentenced “Brigadier General Amjad Khalid and a number of officers who were with him” to death for confronting the Southern Transitional Council during their positions in the Yemeni army. Amjad Khalid was dismissed from his position early this year.
The court considered them “leaders of an armed gang.” Amjad Khalid was the commander of the Transport Brigade under the Yemeni Ministry of Defense and fought the Transitional Council in 2019.
The source indicated that the court sentenced journalist Ahmed Mahar to four years in prison for supporting the Yemeni army in the Aden battles between the Yemeni government and the UAE-backed Transitional Council.
The Yemeni government or the Ministry of Defense, under whose orders Brigadier General Amjad Khalid and the officers were working, did not comment on the rulings.
The Battle of Aden was an armed clash that erupted in August 2019 between the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council forces and the Yemeni government in Aden, after the then-Deputy President of the Southern Transitional Council, Hani bin Brik, called for a general uprising and demanded his forces to occupy the Ma’ashiq presidential palace.
Amjad Khalid’s brother, “Yusuf Khalid,” was previously assassinated. Over the years, Amjad Khalid has been subjected to violations by the Transitional Council, including raiding and burning his house, arresting his father and a number of his relatives.
